On October 9, 2008 my annual mammogram turned up a second recurrence of breast cancer. That wasn’t even the bad news! I no longer had health insurance. I had been denied coverage due to my pre-existing condition – breast cancer 4 years earlier. Confronting the disease for a second time as well as dealing with our nation’s flawed health care system provoked me to seek a documentary filmmaker (Roynn Lisa Simmons) and a still photographer (Claudia Hehr) to document my journey. Upon learning that I had the aggressive HER2+ form of the disease, I was determined not to become just a statistic. I am not alone. One in 8 women will be diagnosed with the disease. And if you thought that breast cancer only occurred in women, you’d be wrong. One in every 1,000 men will be diagnosed each year.
